Instagram adds multiple captions carousel to boost creator engagement

Instagram, on 18 June, introduced a new feature for multiple captions, that allows users to add individual carousel captions to each slide in a carousel post. This is an upgrade to one of the platform’s popular content formats and is now live in India.

According to the announcement, creators were once limited using one caption for a whole carousel. Anyone who’s posted a vacation dump knows exactly why this matters. 

To create a carousel post, users simply tap the caption area and switch on the ‘Multiple Captions’ toggle. From there, a separate caption can be written for each individual slide.

Before this update, users relied on the numbered caption to provide context for individual slides. 1. Goa sunset, 2. That thali at the beach shack, 3. Almost missed the ferry, 4. Worth it. Users cram a whole trip’s worth of context into one caption block and just trust people to match the number to the slide.

The workload problem nobody’s talking about


Writing social media content has become harder for managers. Instead of writing a single caption for each post, user can now create a complete story for each slide while following strict deadlines and maintaining the brand’s voice.

Creators who approach each carousel as a sequence rather than a slideshow are recognised by the standard features, but for an individual in charge of five accounts and a content calendar, that reward appears to be five times the effort.

The update Indian creators been waiting for


Instagram is growing rapidly in India for local creators like food bloggers, travel influencers, teachers, and business owners, carousel posts are still the best way to connect with their audience.

This latest function allows many creative techniques as educational influencers to develop sequential tutorials where every frame features specific guidance or advice. Carousels are already Instagram’s best-performing format, consistently reaching more people than Reels or single-image posts. With per-slide captions now in the mix, creators have a new way to keep viewers hooked one slide at a time.

The update is important for storytellers, meme creators, and performers as they can now let the plot develop gradually, creating momentum or leaving the punchline for the last slide, rather than bringing narrative into a single caption.

Part of a larger shift


Instagram on 8 June, released a much awaited grid-reorder tool. In this tool pinned posts remain fixed at the top, the rest of the grid can be reorganised without affecting existing captions, original posting dates, or engagement.

Mosseri has detailed a vision to transform Instagram into a TV-friendly experience featuring channel surfing and longer Reels. 

The app has recently introduced enhanced feed controls and Reel scheduling to provide users with more autonomy over their content.The real question is what’s next? Can creators edit captions after posting? And how will Instagram balance its “authenticity” push with more AI tools?
